I’ve started this post a half dozen times from this stiff airport “lounge” chair. This was our first home – a launching point for a continent of adventure – a place to be together – and a place where we were very much alone.
It’s been a tough few months. Year one was magical. Year two hit us with stress and frustration. We’ve laughed that we woke up on our anniversary, and already it was unfolding differently than we expected.
A couple of months ago, I had a desire to make portraits of the diverse, beautiful, feisty, and joyful women of our Pretoria church. I was shy and tentative, and I kept coming up with reasons not to execute the project.

South Africa is our first home together, and when we leave in a few months, we won’t soon forget the people who helped make it home for us. We are thankful for the smiling faces, the exchanges of stories, and the care that greet us every day.
